FULL-TIME RESEARCH SPECIALIST - Holden Arboretum

Will assist with establishing, evaluating, and managing woody ornamental plant breeding populations at The Holden Arboretum’s research station. Breeding program focuses on developing superior rhododendrons for continental climates; complemented by research that examines their adaptation to winter freezing injury and diseases caused by fungal pathogens.

Assists in the planning and execution of experiments: data collection and analysis in the field, greenhouse and laboratory; and extensive record-keeping and database management of plant collections and populations.
Supervises seasonal staff and volunteers, and performs occasional outreach.

Experience and Qualifications

  1. BA or BS in horticulture or plant sciences, with some coursework in plant breeding or genetics.
  2. MS in plant sciences, plant breeding or genetics or 3-4 years experience in a research laboratory preferred.
  3. Field experience in care/maintenance of plant breeding populations in containerized and field-grown plants, in pollination and seed propagation, and in assessment and data collection of field performance; laboratory research experience in a variety of methods, including electrophoresis, spectrophotometry and molecular methodologies.
  4. Annual certification of a pesticide applicator license.
