Title: Modifying Green Roof Substrates for Nutrient Retention in Urban Farming Systems

Speaker: Dr. Andrew Ristvey, Extension Specialist, Commercial Horticulture, University of Maryland

Description: As cities adopt green roofs as stormwater management tools to counter impervious surfaces, some agriculturally minded, urban-based entrepreneurs are “going up” to satisfy the need for fresh produce in these urban centers. The choice to use roofs for farming is because ground-level property is at a premium in urban centers and often the urban soils are of poor quality or highly contaminated. The typically infertile green roof substrates need modification for higher fertility and depth, and are irrigated for crop production. All of these changes may influence the original stormwater management characteristics of the green roof. Our research focuses on mitigating the potential nitrogen and phosphorus loss coming from modified green roof substrates while we try to understand the potential change in green roof stormwater management performance.
