Title: Laser Scarecrows: A New Approach to Bird Control in Crops

Speaker: Dr. Rebecca Nelson Brown, Professor of Plant Sciences – Sustainable Agriculture, Department of Plant Sciences and Entomology, University of Rhode Island

Birds provide many benefits in the agricultural landscape, but they are also a significant source of crop damage and loss, particularly in fruit and vegetable crops. Protecting crops from birds is expensive and laborious, and some of the most widely used methods create noise pollution and conflicts with neighbors. Vision is a key sense for birds, and species which damage crops are very sensitive to color. Many birds can see laser beams, and will avoid moving laser beams. Recent technological advances have made automated laser scarecrows a realistic option in agriculture. This webinar will provide an introduction to laser scarecrow technology, and report on recent research in sweet corn and sod production.
