Title: Dangerous Trees? Separating Fact from Fiction in Professional Risk Assessments
Speaker: Dr. Andrew Koeser, Assistant Professor, Urban Tree and Landscape Management, University of Florida - Gulf Coast Research and Education Center
This Webinar will highlight:
Urban trees provide a whole host of economic, environmental, and health benefits. However, they can also damage property and injure (or even kill) unlucky targets when failure occurs. Homeowners and property managers depend on the expert opinion of professional tree care workers when making decisions regarding the fate of a trees with questionable structural integrity. How good is this advice? Is it accurate? Are the methods used repeatable? How can arborists with the same training come to differing conclusions regarding tree safety? This webinar summarizes 6 years worth of tree risk research, ranging from experiments designed to tease out the human aspects of risk assessment and risk acceptance to the cross-validation of actual risk assessments conducted by professionals prior to Hurricanes Matthew and Irma. The talk has implications for all green industry professionals charged with the care and management of mature trees in populated areas.
