Bobbie Schwartz
Landscape Designer
Bobbie's Green Thumb
Shaker Heights, Ohio
B.A. - The Ohio State University, 1962
Area of emphasis: Humanities

As the owner of Bobbie's Green Thumb LLC, a full-service design company, Bobbie Schwartz is responsible for meeting with clients, creating designs, ordering plant material, arranging pickup and delivery, overseeing installation, performing maintenance, and of course billing. Schwartz's designs are a result of listening to client's desires and learning about their relationship to the landscape. Her work is epitomized by certain signature elements: a passion for color, a love affair with perennials and ornamental grasses, and the creation of four-season landscapes.

"I love getting others enthused about gardening by sharing the knowledge that I have gained in my years as a gardener and landscape designer," says this certified professional landscape designer. Her passion for gardening and design led her to author the book, "The Design Puzzle -- Putting the Pieces Together." She also shares her knowledge by lecturing both locally and nationally and in her freelance writing for trade publications and for Fine Gardening.

Schwartz advises student to get hands-on experience with design work and plant material. "Work with plants as much as possible in order to gain practical knowledge – plants don’t read the books and frequently perform differently than specified.  Design courses are essential for future designers but try to intern to learn the practical aspects."

To increase her knowledge of gardening and design, Bobbie regularly attends horticultural and design conferences, which include lectures and garden tours. Active in ONLA, PPA, AND APLD, Bobbie will become President of APLD in January 2005. An award winning landscape designer, Schwartz reminds us of what plants offer. "Plants beautify and renew our world.  They also teach us patience, a skill we all need in order to cope with various aspects of life."
