"What could be more rewarding than getting to work with plants you find aesthetically pleasing and that provide so many important functions and products to our society?" says hardwood tree researcher Charles Michler. The Director of the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center, Michler's vision about tree improvement research and hardwood regeneration opportunities for the future is enthusiastic. A recent $21.5 million endowment gift speaks to the work the center proposes. "This gift will allow us to perform additional genomics research that otherwise would have been difficult to undertake because of the lack of federal research grant programs for hardwoods," explains Michler.

Despite the duties of managing 27 personnel, administering a $1 million budget, writing grants and raising private funds, Michler is a researcher at heart. Earning all three of his degrees from OSU, Michler credits both his faculty adviser and fellow graduate students with driving him to succeed, "My adviser encouraged me to persevere and we had an incredible group of graduate students who were valuable mentors."

Michler recommends, "Immersing yourself in the opportunities and experiences you will have during your academic career, including attendance at short courses, professional societies, educational field trips and study abroad" in order to build a strong knowledge base. He adds, "Whether the job market is tight or plentiful, there will always be a place for someone who is relevant, a critical thinker, and a hard worker."

Michler champions research on trees because, "Plants are the lifeblood of our society, providing both nourishment for our bodies and our souls."
