Dr. Curt Rom, Associate Professor of Horticulture at the University of Arkansas, describes his life as a diverse mix, "My days are a mix of plants and people, of teaching and discovery. Being a college professor with teaching, research and service responsibilities is very rewarding, and very exciting. No two days are the same."

Rom, the son of a pomologist, grew up on a family-owned farm in Fayetteville, Arkansas where he later returned as a trained pomologist himself. Since earning his MS and PhD at Ohio State studying orchard production and tree physiology, Rom now teaches plant science and fruit science courses while researching apple and peach culture, physiology and breeding at his other alma mater, the University of Arkansas (BS 1980 Horticulture).

As evidenced by his recent appointment as Chair of Campus Faculty, Rom is committed to not only his own research and students, but all the teaching and research on the campus. "Through my campus service assignment, I investigate campus governance issues, especially related to quality student programs, enhancing the educational experience on this campus, and faculty issues of quality and performance," explains Rom, who has not missed a graduation ceremony since joining the Arkansas Department of Horticulture faculty in 1989. "Truly, graduation is one of the most gratifying experiences; it is wonderful to see our students graduate and succeed."

In addition to his teaching, Rom maintains an active research program with four graduate students searching for new discoveries. Rom explains the rewards of research, "During our state Horticultural Society meeting where I was giving a talk on our research, it was so gratifying to talk to our growers and hear about how the research is assisting their success."
