Area of emphasis: Turfgrass Science

"It's really a thrill to be working in Major League sports so soon after graduation," says the Head Groundskeeper for Columbus Crew Stadium, Matt Williams. He oversees the playing surface as well as maintaining the area in and around Crew Stadium. "I couldn't be more excited to be a part of the Columbus Crew and Major League Soccer," said Williams. "I enjoy the challenges of maintaining the field to the world-class standards expected by the athletes and the organization."

The Mt. Vernon, Ohio native and Ohio State University graduate came to the Columbus Crew Stadium after working for two-plus seasons as Assistant Field Manager for the Cincinnati Reds. Williams landed his first dream job even before picking up his diploma. Williams began his turfgrass career with the Cincinnati Reds only three days after his graduation in March, 2001. Williams worked under the tutelage of fellow OSU alum, Doug Gallant (BS 1994 Agronomy), superintendent for the new home of the Reds - the Great American Ball Park.

With strong skills in math and science, Williams switched to Turfgrass Management after originally studying pharmaceuticals. "Like most people, I had no idea how much science is involved in a major like Sports Turf." Williams also worked at the OSU Turfgrass Research Facility, Scioto Reserve Golf and Athletic Club, and Tartan Fields Golf Club and credits his professor, Dr. John Street, for his influence in landing his dream job. "He is really well connected and knows a lot of people."
