As teacher, researcher, adviser and author, Dr. Nick Christians prepares students to handle turfgrass management practices and problems. He gets great satisfaction from working closely with his plant science students. "I presently advise more than 100 undergraduate students, so a typical day involves a lot of meetings with students. Watching my former students do well in their careers is the most rewarding part of what I do."

"The amount of technical knowledge needed by today's turf managers has greatly increased over the years. There is also a greater emphasis on developing management skills," says Christians. He recommends the plant science industry as a career path. "Working with plants can be one of the most rewarding of all careers and it gives one the chance to work in the outdoors and to improve their community. Get as much experience as you can during summer internships and make as many contacts in the field as possible."

Christians, who holds three U.S. patents based on his use of corn gluten meal as a natural herbicide, attributes his own career successes to a strong educational background. "OSU provided me with a sound scientific background and equipped me with the tools that I would need to become a successful faculty member following graduation."

"Writing can be very hard work but it is also a very rewarding experience when the work is done," explains Christians, who has authored three turf grass management books: Fundamentals of Turfgrass Management, Scotts Lawns -- Your Guide To A Beautiful Lawn, and The Mathematics of Turfgrass Maintenance. "I recommend that students get as much experience writing as possible during their training."
