As Director of Restoration Ecology for The Wilds, Nicole Cavender conducts and coordinates research, on-site restoration and biological surveys, writes grants, and does environmental education. Cavender explains how her job varies season to season. “In the winter I spend a lot of time writing grants, answering e-mails, and coordinating projects for the upcoming season. The warm months of the year I spend a lot of time outdoors conducting biological surveys, field work, and working with students and volunteers.”

The environmental work is quite rewarding for her, “I really enjoy spending my time and effort to improve the environment. Much of our environmental landscape is in great need of help and I feel privileged to be a part of this restoration movement.”

Cavender describes the Horticulture & Crop Science faculty as an excellent resource and she hopes to continue to work on research projects with Ohio State. “The interactions that I had with colleagues and faculty as well as the tools that were available to learn and conduct research gave me a great foundation to cultivate my interests. ”

Cavender encourages students to take advantage of the network available through Ohio State, as well as the surrounding community. “Join clubs, attend seminars and professional meetings, visit horticultural businesses, and never be afraid to approach faculty with questions, even if they are not your class professor.” She says that an important thing while in college is to, “Keep an open mind. A good education has much to do with what you make of it and personally put into it.”
