"My responsibilities include the day to day management of the winter nurseries in Hawaii," explains Sandra Endicott, a senior research associate at the Waimea Research Center Farm. "Our team is responsible for the field preparation, planting, fertilizing, irrigation, and pest management of the corn, soybeans and sunflowers crops."

Winning “Sales Agronomist of the Year” for Pioneer was a highlight of Endicott's career, but she recently switched jobs to pursue a different passion. "I had the best job in the world, but after 15 years of being a sales agronomist in Ohio I had a nagging desire to work more closely with the research organization of Pioneer Hi-Bred. I transferred here in 2004 to be more involved in research."

Now Endicott puts her communication skills to use while overseeing 20 full and part-time employees. "My opportunities to student teach, both as an undergrad and grad student was very helpful in developing my communication skills as well as my organizational skills."

In addition to participating in internships and networking with industry members, Endicott advises students to develop a broad level of knowledge. "Get as much experience as possible with teaching, researching and take a broad range of course work to cover the basics as much as possible. One can always take more classes later on, but get a good broad based level of knowledge and experience first."

"Plants are the basic food source for our world, therefore working with plants and the new technologies associated with plants, we can feed the world!," reminds Endicott.
